From the landscape made of the decrepit walls of Havana, one could attempt an anthropology of the balcony, emblematic of a mode of sociality and space of transition between the street and the home, in-between seeing and being seen, spectacle and spectator, where the curtains, instead of hiding, reveal what happens behind them. Like the attitude of its population that behaves with the same provocative self-assuredness behind closed doors as outside of them, with this magical verb—balconear or porching (but for balconies)—becomes a metaphor of a condition, that of survival and the undeniable joy of living.
